Wigan is a metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester, encompassing the industrial town of Wigan, the former coal mining towns of Leigh and Ashton-in-Makerfield, and parts of the West Pennine Moors. It is famously referenced in George Orwell's 'The Road to Wigan Pier', which documented industrial life. The borough has a population of around 330,000.
