About cherwell

Cherwell is a local government district in Oxfordshire, named after the River Cherwell, encompassing the historic market town of Banbury, Bicester, Kidlington, and numerous villages within an area stretching from the Cotswolds fringe to the Oxfordshire countryside. This predominantly rural district features the Oxford Canal, the Cherwell Valley, and some of Oxfordshire's fastest-growing towns. The climate is typical of southern England with mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and warmer, drier conditions than western areas. Culturally, Cherwell maintains strong historic identity with Banbury's famous cross (celebrated in the nursery rhyme), its historic town center with Georgian architecture, and the nearby Broughton Castle. The area preserves important heritage including Sulgrave Manor (ancestral home of George Washington's family), Rousham House (one of England's most significant 18th-century landscapes), and the Oxford Canal (providing recreational opportunities). Bicester has undergone dramatic growth with its designer shopping village (Bicester Village) attracting international visitors and major housing development while retaining its historic core with the parish church and market square. Kidlington serves as a large commuter village for Oxford. The district's villages feature traditional Oxfordshire character with stone and thatched cottages while the Cherwell Valley offers walking and cycling. Bicester's military heritage (RAF Bicester) adds historical interest while the area's excellent transport links (M40, Chiltern Railway) support its growth. Boundary GIS data for Cherwell District Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, supporting market town preservation, managing growth in Bicester, and balancing development with rural character in this north Oxfordshire district.
