About north hertfordshire

North Hertfordshire is a local government district in Hertfordshire, encompassing the historic market towns of Hitchin, Letchworth Garden City, Baldock, and Royston along with numerous villages within an area of attractive chalk downland and agricultural countryside. This northern district features some of Hertfordshire's most significant historic towns and the unique heritage of the Garden City movement. The climate is typical of southeast England with mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and warmer, drier conditions than UK average. Culturally, North Hertfordshire holds exceptional heritage significance with Letchworth Garden City (the world's first Garden City, founded by Ebenezer Howard in 1903, with its unique planned layout, Arts and Crafts architecture, and green space), Hitchin's magnificent medieval town centre (with its historic church, market place, and Georgian buildings), Baldock's Roman and medieval heritage (including its distinctive six-street layout), and Royston's cave and cross. The area preserves important heritage including the remains of the medieval Wymondley Priory, the Icknield Way (ancient trackway), and numerous historic village churches. The district's villages feature traditional Hertfordshire character with timber-framed and brick cottages, village greens, and country pubs while the countryside offers walking including the Icknield Way Path. Letchworth's heritage as the first Garden City is celebrated at the Garden City Collection museum and through the preservation of its unique planned character. North Hertfordshire's excellent schools and transport links (including mainline railway to London and Cambridge) make it desirable for commuters while its historic towns maintain strong community identity. Boundary GIS data for North Hertfordshire District Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for preserving the unique Garden City heritage of Letchworth, protecting historic town centres in Hitchin and Baldock, and managing sustainable development in this historically rich Hertfordshire district.
