About east hampshire

East Hampshire is a local government district in Hampshire, encompassing the historic market towns of Petersfield, Alton, and Bordon along with numerous villages within an area of outstanding natural beauty including the South Downs National Park and the East Hampshire AONB. This scenically spectacular district features the rolling chalk landscapes of the South Downs, the Wealden countryside, and some of Hampshire's most attractive villages. The climate is typical of southern England with mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and warmer, drier conditions than UK average, with the Downs creating local variations and slightly cooler conditions on higher ground. Culturally, East Hampshire maintains strong rural identity with Petersfield's magnificent Georgian market town character (its broad high street, historic market square with its statue of William III, and the Petersfield Heath with its ponds), Alton's historic town with its connections to Jane Austen (who lived nearby at Chawton) and its brewery heritage (home to the famous Alton beer), and the surrounding villages with their traditional Hampshire character. The area preserves exceptional heritage including Jane Austen's House at Chawton (where the novelist spent her final years and wrote or revised all her novels), Selborne with its connections to the naturalist Gilbert White (The Wakes museum and the ancient hanger woods), The Grange at Northington (magnificent Greek Revival mansion), and numerous medieval churches and historic houses. The South Downs National Park offers spectacular walking including the South Downs Way and the Hangers Way while the East Hampshire AONB provides beautiful countryside with its characteristic beech hangers. The district's villages feature traditional brick and flint cottages with thatched roofs. Boundary GIS data for East Hampshire District Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this beautiful area, preserving the unique heritage of Jane Austen and Gilbert White, protecting the South Downs National Park, and maintaining the character of historic market towns and villages.
