About stroud

Stroud is a local government district in Gloucestershire, encompassing the town of Stroud and numerous villages within the beautiful Cotswold valleys, including the Golden Valley, Nailsworth, Minchinhampton, and Wotton-under-Edge. This scenically spectacular district features the steep Cotswold valleys, industrial heritage from the wool trade, and a distinctive cultural identity as one of the UK's most creative and environmentally conscious areas. The climate is varied with the Cotswold escarpment creating local conditions, mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and cooler upland areas with the valleys offering shelter. Culturally, Stroud holds exceptional significance as a centre of the Cotswold wool trade, with its steep valleys lined with former cloth mills (many now converted to creative and residential use), the Stroudwater Navigation, and the Thames and Severn Canal. The area preserves important heritage including the magnificent woollen churches, the canal tunnels at Sapperton, and the historic market towns and villages with their characteristic Cotswold stone cottages, steep streets, and village greens. Stroud's modern reputation as a centre of green politics, alternative culture, and creativity (celebrated at the Stroud International Textiles Festival and the Stroud Fringe) gives it a distinctive identity. The Cotswolds AONB covers much of the district offering spectacular walking including the Cotswold Way National Trail with its panoramic views from the escarpment. Minchinhampton and Rodborough Commons provide extensive common land with grazing rights and spectacular views while the valleys offer woodland and riverside walks. The district's farmers' markets (Stroud has one of the UK's best) and local food culture reflect its strong community ethos. Boundary GIS data for Stroud District Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this distinctive Cotswold district, preserving the unique industrial heritage of the wool valleys, protecting the Cotswolds AONB, and supporting the area's creative and environmental communities.
