About rother

Rother is a local government district in East Sussex, named after the River Rother which flows through it, encompassing the historic towns of Rye, Battle, and Bexhill-on-Sea, along with numerous villages within an area of outstanding natural beauty including the High Weald AONB. This coastal and rural district features some of Sussex's most famous historic towns, the site of the Battle of Hastings, and spectacular coastal and Wealden landscapes. The climate is mild and maritime with moderate rainfall, fresh sea breezes on the coast, and typical southern English temperatures. Culturally, Rother holds exceptional historical significance with Battle (where the Battle of Hastings was fought in 1066, with Battle Abbey built by William the Conqueror on the site, now a magnificent ruin and the centrepiece of the town), Rye (one of England's most beautiful medieval towns, with its cobbled streets, half-timbered houses, the Ypres Tower, and the famous Mermaid Inn), and Bexhill-on-Sea (elegant seaside resort with its De La Warr Pavilion (internationally famous modernist building, one of the UK's first public modernist buildings, now a contemporary arts centre)). The area preserves exceptional heritage including Bodiam Castle (one of England's most romantic and perfectly preserved medieval castles, surrounded by its moat), Great Dixter (Christopher Lloyd's famous garden and historic house), and numerous medieval churches and villages. The High Weald AONB offers spectacular walking through ancient woodland and rolling hills while the coastline provides traditional seaside character. Rye's position on the River Rother and its harbour (now silted) add to its charm while the marshes provide important bird habitat. The district's villages feature traditional Sussex character with sandstone and tile-hung cottages, village greens, and country pubs. Boundary GIS data for Rother District Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this historically rich district, preserving the incomparable heritage of Battle Abbey, Rye, and Bodiam Castle, protecting the High Weald AONB, and supporting cultural venues like the De La Warr Pavilion.
