About torridge
Torridge is a local government district in Devon, encompassing the towns of Bideford, Great Torrington, and Holsworthy along with numerous villages within the Torridge Valley and North Devon's beautiful countryside. This predominantly rural district features the River Torridge, the Hartland Peninsula (with its dramatic coastline), and some of Devon's most unspoiled landscapes. The climate is mild and maritime with moderate rainfall, influenced by the Atlantic, with the coast experiencing fresh sea breezes and inland areas slightly more sheltered. Culturally, Torridge maintains strong identity with Bideford's historic port character (its long bridge (24 arches), its quay, and connections to the author Charles Kingsley (Westward Ho! and The Water Babies)), Great Torrington's hilltop market town with its castle mound and Rolle Canal, and Holsworthy's market town character. The area preserves important heritage including Hartland Abbey (historic house with gardens), the Hartland Quay (dramatic coastline with former harbour), and the unique village of Clovelly (privately-owned, traffic-free, with its cobbled street cascading down to the harbour). The North Devon Coast (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) offers spectacular coastal scenery including Hartland Point, the rugged cliffs, and hidden coves. The Torridge Valley provides beautiful river scenery and fishing (the Torridge is famous for salmon and trout). The district's villages feature traditional Devon character with whitewashed and thatched cottages while the rural areas maintain strong agricultural traditions. RHS Garden Rosemoor (at Great Torrington) is one of Devon's premier gardens. The Tarka Trail (long-distance cycling and walking route) follows the Torridge through the district. Boundary GIS data for Torridge District Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this beautiful North Devon district, protecting the North Devon Coast AONB, preserving the unique character of Clovelly and coastal villages, and supporting sustainable tourism and agriculture.
