About south hams

South Hams is a local government district in Devon, encompassing some of the most beautiful coastal and rural landscapes in southern England, including the towns of Totnes, Dartmouth, Kingsbridge, Salcombe, and Ivybridge, along with numerous villages within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This scenically spectacular district features dramatic coastline, the Dart Estuary, and rolling South Devon countryside. The climate is one of the mildest in the UK, with South Devon benefiting from its sheltered south coast position and Gulf Stream influence, creating almost subtropical conditions in sheltered spots. Culturally, South Hams holds exceptional heritage significance with Totnes (one of England's most characterful towns, with its Norman castle, medieval streets, and reputation as a centre of alternative culture and independent shops), Dartmouth (magnificent historic port with its Royal Naval College, castle, and narrow streets), Salcombe (exclusive yachting town with beautiful estuary and mild climate), and Kingsbridge with its market town character. The area preserves exceptional heritage including Dartington Hall (internationally renowned arts and educational trust with its medieval hall and gardens), Greenway (Agatha Christie's holiday home, National Trust), Overbeck's (Edwardian house and garden), and numerous castles and historic churches. The South Devon AONB offers spectacular coastal walking including the South West Coast Path, with dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and beautiful estuaries. The Dart Estuary provides sailing, kayaking, and beautiful scenery while the district's beaches (including Slapton Sands, Blackpool Sands, and Bantham) are among the best in Devon. The villages feature traditional Devon character with whitewashed and thatched cottages. Boundary GIS data for South Hams District Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this exceptionally beautiful area, protecting the South Devon AONB, preserving the unique character of Totnes, Dartmouth, and Salcombe, and supporting sustainable tourism and coastal communities in one of Devon's most desirable districts.
