About east devon

East Devon is a local government district in Devon, encompassing the towns of Exmouth, Sidmouth, Honiton, Axminster, and Budleigh Salterton, along with numerous villages within the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This coastal and rural district features some of Devon's most beautiful coastline, the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, and the rolling hills of the Devon redlands. The climate is mild and maritime with moderate rainfall, with the south coast enjoying particularly mild, sunny conditions and the East Devon AONB creating beautiful landscapes. Culturally, East Devon maintains strong identity with its elegant seaside towns: Exmouth (with its two-mile sandy beach, promenade, and marina), Sidmouth (one of England's most elegant Regency resorts, with its Esplanade, Georgian architecture, and folk festival), Budleigh Salterton (with its pebble beach and unique cliffs), and the inland towns of Honiton (famous for lace-making and its high street) and Axminster (world-famous for its carpets, still produced at the Axminster Carpets factory). The area preserves exceptional heritage including the Jurassic Coast (England's only natural World Heritage Site, with its 185 million years of geological history exposed in the cliffs), Beer Quarry Caves (historic underground quarry), and numerous historic houses including Escot and Bicton Park. The East Devon AONB offers spectacular walking including the South West Coast Path and the East Devon Way, with dramatic cliffs, heathland, and woodland. The Otter Valley provides beautiful river scenery and wildlife including the famous Otterton Mill. The district's villages feature traditional Devon character with cob and thatch cottages while the coastal towns maintain their elegant resort character. The Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth is one of Devon's most popular attractions. Boundary GIS data for East Devon District Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this beautiful coastal district, protecting the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and East Devon AONB, preserving the elegant character of the Regency resorts, and supporting sustainable tourism along Devon's most celebrated coastline.
