About bolsover

Bolsover is a local government district in Derbyshire, encompassing the towns of Bolsover, Shirebrook, and Clowne along with numerous villages within the north-eastern part of the county, historically part of the Derbyshire coalfield. This district features strong mining heritage, the dramatic Bolsover Castle, and attractive countryside including the Vale of Scarsdale. The climate is typical of the English Midlands with mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and typical central England conditions. Culturally, Bolsover maintains strong identity with Bolsover Castle (one of England's most romantic and unusual castles, a 17th-century romantic fantasy built on the site of a medieval fortress, with its stunning interiors, wall paintings, and Riding School), the district's mining heritage (celebrated at local museums and through preserved pit wheels and memorials), and its market towns. The area preserves important heritage including Hardwick Hall (though technically just outside the district, closely associated), the Creswell Crags (limestone gorge with caves containing evidence of Ice Age occupation, the most northerly point in Europe reached by early humans), and the remains of the Derbyshire coalfield. The Creswell Crags museum and visitor centre interpret the site's international significance as the location of Britain's only known Ice Age cave art. The district's former mining communities maintain strong traditions and community identity, with working men's clubs, brass bands, and local pride. The surrounding countryside offers walking and cycling including the Five Pits Trail and the Doe Lea Valley. Shirebrook's modern role includes the large distribution centre for the online fashion retailer Boohoo, bringing employment to the former mining town. The district's villages feature traditional Derbyshire character with brick and stone cottages. Boundary GIS data for Bolsover District Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, supporting mining heritage preservation, management of the internationally significant Creswell Crags, and community development in this former coalfield district.
