About buckinghamshire
Buckinghamshire is a unitary authority area in Buckinghamshire, formed in 2020 from the merger of four former districts (Aylesbury Vale, Chiltern, South Bucks, and Wycombe), encompassing the county town of Aylesbury, the university town of High Wycombe, the historic market towns of Buckingham, Marlow, and Chesham, and numerous villages within the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This large and prosperous area features some of the most desirable residential areas in southeast England, spectacular Chilterns landscapes, and a rich heritage from furniture-making, lace-making, and its proximity to London. The climate is typical of southeast England with mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and warmer, drier conditions than UK average, with the Chilterns creating local variations. Culturally, Buckinghamshire holds exceptional heritage significance with the Chilterns AONB (one of England's most beautiful landscapes, with its beech woodlands, chalk streams, and rolling hills), the historic towns of Marlow (with its suspension bridge, Georgian high street, and riverside setting) and Aylesbury (with its duck heritage and historic county town character). The area preserves exceptional heritage including Chequers (the Prime Minister's country residence, though not open to the public), Cliveden (magnificent National Trust estate with gardens and house, scene of the Profumo affair), Hughenden Manor (Disraeli's home, National Trust), West Wycombe Park (lavish 18th-century mansion with grounds), and Waddesdon Manor (spectacular Rothschild château-style house with art collection, National Trust). High Wycombe's furniture-making heritage (once the centre of the UK's chair-making industry) is celebrated at the Wycombe Museum while the Chilterns villages feature traditional brick and flint cottages. The River Thames forms the southern boundary with beautiful reaches at Marlow and Bourne End while the Grand Union Canal runs through the area. The Chilterns offer spectacular walking including the Ridgeway and the Chiltern Way. Buckinghamshire's excellent schools and transport links (including Chiltern Railways to London) make it one of the UK's most desirable locations for commuters and families. Boundary GIS data for Buckinghamshire Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this large and desirable area, protecting the Chilterns AONB, preserving the world-class heritage houses, and balancing development pressures with conservation in one of England's most attractive counties.
