About county durham
County Durham is a unitary authority area in County Durham, formed in 2009 from the merger of several districts, encompassing the historic city of Durham, the towns of Darlington (though Darlington has its own unitary authority, the county area includes Bishop Auckland, Consett, Barnard Castle, Spennymoor, and Newton Aycliffe, and numerous villages within this historic northern county. This diverse area features the Durham Cathedral and Castle World Heritage Site, the North Pennines AONB, the Durham Dales, and a rich industrial heritage from coal mining and lead mining. The climate is varied with the lowlands experiencing typical northeast conditions while the Pennines have upland weather with higher rainfall and winter snow. Culturally, County Durham holds world significance with Durham Cathedral and Castle (UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of England's greatest Norman buildings, with its magnificent cathedral (the shrine of St Cuthbert and the Venerable Bede) and castle (now part of Durham University)). The area preserves exceptional heritage including Raby Castle (one of England's finest medieval castles, seat of Lord Barnard), Auckland Castle (historic palace of the Bishops of Durham, recently restored and opened to the public), Beamish Museum (one of the UK's best open-air museums, telling the story of life in the North East), and the Durham Dales with their lead mining heritage. The North Pennines AONB offers spectacular walking, with high moorland, waterfalls, and the Teesdale and Weardale valleys. Bishop Auckland's Spanish Gallery and the Auckland Project are regenerating the town with world-class art collections. The former mining communities retain strong traditions and identity while Barnard Castle (the town) is famous for its castle and the Bowes Museum (with its magnificent collections). The Durham Heritage Coast has been transformed from former colliery sites to beautiful coastline. Durham University (England's third oldest) dominates the city's cultural and educational life while the county's market towns maintain their historic character. Boundary GIS data for Durham County Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this World Heritage city and county, protecting the North Pennines AONB, preserving the unique industrial and religious heritage, and supporting regeneration in former mining communities.
