About medway

Medway is a unitary authority in Kent, formed in 1998, encompassing the towns of Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Rainham, and Strood along the River Medway. This historic area is known as the 'Historic Dockyard' towns, with a rich maritime and military heritage spanning centuries, including the Chatham Dockyard (one of the UK's most important naval dockyards). The climate is typical of southeast England with mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and warmer, drier conditions than UK average. Culturally, Medway holds exceptional heritage significance with Chatham Historic Dockyard (one of the most complete surviving dockyards from the age of sail, with its magnificent ropery, docks, and ships including HMS Gannet and HMS Ocelot, now a major museum). The area preserves exceptional heritage including Rochester Cathedral (the second oldest cathedral in England, founded 604 AD), Rochester Castle (one of the finest Norman keeps in England, with its spectacular 12th-century tower), Upnor Castle (Elizabethan artillery fort), and the Dickens connections (Rochester features heavily in Dickens's novels, with the annual Dickens Festival celebrating his legacy). The Medway towns have a distinctive identity, with Rochester's historic character, Chatham's naval heritage, and Gillingham's residential and commercial role. The River Medway (with its bridges and historic waterfront) is central to the area's character. The Universities at Medway (a partnership of several universities) contribute to educational and cultural life while the Medway Council's creative industries initiatives support the area's regeneration. The Medway Swans and the Medway Queen paddle steamer add to the maritime heritage. The area's position on the High Speed 1 railway provides excellent transport links to London while its heritage attractions draw visitors. The Medway area's industrial heritage (including the cement works and paper mills) has shaped its character alongside its naval history. Boundary GIS data for Medway Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this historically rich area, preserving its world-class naval dockyard and medieval heritage, supporting the Dickens legacy, and balancing regeneration with conservation.
